New Zealand Book Council

So, I came across this pretty fascinating short film/ad today... and tried to google it to post on the blog, but I found this instead...

Click, click, click!

Below, you will find what I was actually looking for.

Alright, that will be it for now.

Off to read another chapter of my book! Yipee.

Structure Examples

Hey guys, like i told you, these are some scans with great examples of grids, uses of grid, and the importances of the structure for graphic design matters. Please, check this everyone of them, and ask yourself what they look so nice and organized, afterwards compare to your pages and try to materialize your understanding about grid systems in your own presentation.

This link is also helpful. ;)

New Media

Clients

A collection of anonymously contributed client horror stories from designers.

I was doing a small brochure site for a client when he requested some revisions. I did the revisions as requested and dropped him a mail saying all was good.

I got a call a few hours later from him with this story:

Hi it’s xxxx. My brother has just been made redundant and is desperate for money—he wants to do this website and me to pay him for it. How much will it cost me to knock the website on the head now and give it to him to do?

I said that as I was just waiting on copy and other small bits and pieces that a figure of 75% of the agreed amount was fair. He said he’d think about it and call me back. I got a call ten minutes later for the client who was now yelling:

xxxxx, you’re just not doing what I’m asking. You’re not listening to me and your ignoring what I want. The text I wanted putting in is there, but it’s small and black. I asked for a big bold heading in red! I don’t want to continue, you’re not doing what I’m paying you for.

I was shocked and genuinely offended, but as he gave the vital ‘the text is there but not how I want it’ I could instantly ascertain that his browser had cached the stylesheet. I explained this to him in a surprisingly cool and collected manner at which point he realised that I wasn’t my fault at all.

He was really really apologetic but relations were different after that…

Incidentally the project did end up getting cancelled early as he refused to pay for any more revisions.

One client wanted me to fax though the letterhead paper we had chosen. I said it wont have any texture so you wont see it. They replied ‘no, fax though the paper’ as if the paper would travel down the phone line and re-materialize at the other end.

Can you fax it to me in color please?

This is going straight into my portfolio

I created, with MS Visio, a simple logo (a ¼” H x 2” W graphic) to which I want to add 8 short lines of text to then have the combined image as my Outlook e-mail Signature. Specifically, I want the following …

A) Have the Signature/image DURABLY embedded as my Signature for each e-mail I send,

B) Have the Signature/image received and viewable by any Recipient (regardless of whether their e-mail client is set to receive e-mails in plain text or .HTML format),

C) Have the Signature/image appear as sharp to the Recipient as when sent, and

D) Have the Signature/image remain embedded within the e-mail when the Recipient either Replies to or Forwards the message.

Client: It looks good I just want the text to POP more.. I want more contrast (the text is white on black)
Client: Can we change it to like a gray?
Me: Gray on black?
Client: Yeah I think that would make it really stand out
Client: (Fast forward 5 color changes to the SWF) I think white would look best here

Can you make the circles a little bit rounder?

It seems to be taking a long time. Would it be quicker if I came down and sat with you guys through it all?

I sent out a link to the beta of a site I was building for a client. Since it was powered by a CMS, the pages still used dummy content. I got a kick out of the email I got back:

“We love the site, but one thing: maybe our computer is broken, but everything seems to be getting translated into Latin. It just says ‘Lorem ipsum something something’. Maybe something is broken with the site or else do we need to change a setting?”

There are two more small changes James recommended we make. First, please add a black border around the red lettering to make it stand out better. It’s probably much easier for you to do that in Photoshop than it would me for me to do it pixel by pixel in Paint. Also, aside from making a design with the red letters outlined in black, you need to make an additional design with the entire background black, letters in red. Second, could you make the text larger so it touches both ends of the billboard? It would be great if you could email it straight to James. I believe you have his email address. Thanks.

Yes! I want all them, embossing, de-bossing, foil, gold ink, thick black card. I want it to be the most amazing and truely unique business card ever that people say WOW too.
